The Winterton Boat
Building Museum is a complete lifestyle exhibit representing outport Newfoundland
life with a focus on boat building. Displays in the Taylor Exhibit, show boats
in various stages of design and construction as well as the many uses of these
craft for fishing, hunting, commerce, transportation and communication. Two
full-size inshore fishing boats, with gear for fishing, are on display. From
Mr. David A. Taylor's research there are pictures of Winterton boats under
construction and many of the community's important boat builders.
As part of a Millennium Project 2000 a Trap Skiff was designed and constructed in the museum. A local Boat Builder, writer Parker Donham and an interested resident undertook building this traditional fishing boat. All stages of the design and construction process were recorded on video and photos in the boat building room. The Trap Skiff is now in the museum on display and will be launched and demonstrated in Winterton Harbour each summer.
Outport life exhibits of 19th and 20th century artifacts are in the boat building room, gear display room, library, old fashion kitchen, bedroom and front room. The large hall also contains a variety of displays such as, coopering tools, lumbering tools, war memorabilia, gardening etc.
Located in Winterton. Turn off the Trans Canada Highway at Exit 35, follow Route 75 (Veterans Memorial Highway) as far as Victoria, take Route 74 to Heart's Content, turn right and follow Route 80 to Winterton.
