The Summer Literacy program did not run in 2003. The VCDC was not able to get the two students it needed in 2003 to run the program properly. Two students are needed for individual tutoring and insurance reasons.
The 2002, the VCDC Summer Literacy program ran in cooperation with the Laubach
Literacy Council in Carbonear. Each group had been running very successful
programs in their own communities but loss of funding cut each group to one
student teacher. While the two groups were able to offer a combined version
of the program with the results as good as previous years, the fewer number
of kids and extra cost made the program difficult to handle.
During July and August of 1999 and 2000 the VCDC had two youth working through
SWASP on a community literacy program. They were Natasha Warren, a Second
year Education Student at Memorial University student and Jennifer Hiscock
a first year University Student. The "Summer Time Literacy Program"
operated out of the Victoria Volunteer Fire Department Fire Hall. Approximately
25 students were enrolled in the Four day a week program. Tutoring was on
one bases in half hour sessions.
In 1998, Natasha
Warren, a Second year Education Student at Memorial University student offered
again the community literacy Program. The "Summer Time Literacy Program"
operated out of the Victoria Town Hall. Approximately 25 students were enrolled
for Tutoring on a one to bases in half hour sessions. The program was especially
useful to students with learning disabilities. Teachers at Persalvic Elementary
felt that the program help keep the skills of the students sharp for the new
school year.
During the summer of 1997 the VCDC employed two students, undo Summer Career Placement (SCP) Program, Kelly Earl an Education student and Natasha Warren pre- education student, coordinate a community Literacy program. This program operated out of the United Church for eight weeks. A total of 35 students from K to grade 9 were involved in the program. Feedback from Persalvic School teachers indicated that program was very helpful to students.
